YO LA TENGO are veterans of the indie rock scene, forming in 1984 in New Jersey and playing shows ever since, releasing a total of 13 albums in their impressive career. BO NINGEN are a favourite live act for this reporter, so it was an absolute treat to have them open up the third day of Fuji Rock Festival in the Red Marquee.
The last time I caught these four London-based rockers (originally from Japan) was at Style Band Tokyo in Shibuya back in February, and it was there that I was witness to the brutal unleashing of raw acid-punk passion for which Bo Ningen have become notorious. HURTS were the next group we caught on Day 2, playing in a completely packed Red Marquee. At first, it was hard to ascertain the main reason for this sudden bloating of this stage’s audience; it could have been that a charismatic and attractive male duo were exuding sultry retro alt-pop tunes for the enjoyment of anyone nearby, or perhaps that a sudden torrential downpour had forced many to seek refuge. Demure folk artist from LA PRISCILLA AHN played the Red Marquee, dishing out delightful indie-acoustic melodies to an adoring audience. Ahn has achieved huge success after signing to Blue Note Records in 2008, due largely to the popularity of her track “Dream,” the single featured on her debut album “A Good Day” and, as a result, many of her songs have featured on television shows (such as “Grey’s Anatomy”) and films, plus she’s been touring extensively. Indie pop sensations and aptly named three-piece FUN. from New York was a fierce contender for best act of the day for this reporter. Set up on the largest stage at Fuji Rock Festival, the moment leading man Nate Ruess stepped out onto the stage and broke into the first track, a wave of good vibes washed over the audience and didn’t cease until the last song was over.
